Rhodes Holiday Guide

Old towns, blue seas, Greek food… and absolutely no need to rush.

Why Rhodes?

Rhodes is one of those places where you can do quite a lot — or very little indeed. Both are perfectly acceptable holiday plans.

You've got beautiful beaches, traditional villages, ancient ruins and enough history to keep even the most enthusiastic sightseer occupied. Then there's Rhodes Old Town, where getting slightly lost amongst the cobbled streets is arguably part of the experience.

That's what we like about Rhodes. It works just as well if you want to explore the island as it does if your main ambition for the afternoon involves a sunbed, something cold to drink and deciding where you're eating later.

And being Greece, food is inevitably going to feature quite heavily. We'd consider a holiday where you didn't eat far too much Greek food a fairly serious planning error.

What we'd make time for

Rhodes Old Town would be right at the top of our list. It's one of Europe's best-preserved medieval towns and the sort of place where we'd deliberately leave the map in the bag for a while and just wander.

We'd also make time for Lindos, with its whitewashed houses, little streets and Acropolis overlooking that ridiculously blue sea.

But we wouldn't try to turn the whole holiday into a sightseeing exercise. Pick a few places you genuinely want to see, hire a car for a day if that suits you, find a beach you like and leave some room for doing absolutely nothing.

That's a perfectly legitimate Greek island activity.

Who would we recommend Rhodes to?

Rhodes works particularly well for couples and families who want a proper sunshine holiday but also like having plenty to explore when they get bored of sitting around the pool.

There's a good choice of resorts too, so the experience can be very different depending on where you stay — lively, quiet, traditional or somewhere in between.

And if your ideal holiday involves warm evenings, Greek food and occasionally saying “shall we just have one more?” then Rhodes probably isn't going to be a difficult sell.

Planning a Rhodes trip?

We've created a BlueHazeStudio Rhodes Holiday Planner to help bring everything together — where to stay, different areas of the island, itinerary ideas, bookings, budget, packing and those little details that are much easier to sort out before you're standing at the airport wondering what you've forgotten.

Where we'd stay

We're currently putting together our shortlist of Rhodes hotels and resorts we'd genuinely consider staying at ourselves.

Once our travel partnerships are in place, we'll add our favourites here — along with what we like about them and, importantly, who we think each one would actually suit.
